Having just fed the 5,000 men (15,000 people), the crowd was in a frenzy. They wanted to kidnap Jesus and force Him to be King and overthrow the Romans. Clearly this was NOT God’s plan or God’s timing, and so Jesus seeks some solitude. The disciples are sent across the lake, and when Jesus wants to catch up with them, it sets the stage for the 5th hand-selected sign in John’s gospel account - Jesus' walking on the water. This was one of the private miracles of Jesus for the disciples ONLY, because they too were still learning WHO Jesus Christ truly was!
